Celebrity Courtroom Chic: Nicole Richie Latest Fashionista Defendant

nicole richie at sentencing paris hiltonIs it right to focus more on what bad-girl fashionistas wear to court than what they did to earn a spot in front of the judge? Absolutely not. Now that we've got that out of the way, let's talk fashion.

Nicole Richie appeared before the judge in her DUI case wearing a sophisticated little black dress from Moschino (pronounced mos-KEEN-O) that was worthy of Audrey Hepburn. She wore her trademark oversized sunglasses (a look well-borrowed from style icon Jackie Onassis) and a neat chignon (a look perfected by Grace Kelly).

Paris Hilton, on the other hand, took a stab at using fellow-acusee Winona Ryder's courtroom trademark, the headband. See more of what everyone from cell-phone-throwing supermodel Naomi Campbell to sticky-fingered Winona Ryder wore on their days in court. The Many Looks of Victoria Beckham

victoria beckhamvictoria beckhamIt would be easy to hate Victoria Beckham for her thinviously slim figure and fashion-forward designer wardrobe. After all, she receives pans for her chameleon-like style changes, unsmiling poses and fashion victim status. But you simply can't dismiss Posh Spice as a significant fashion force.

Unlike the handful of fashionable celebrities who have a strong, individual style, Victoria Beckham tends to constantly tranform herself. She started out in the public eye wearing black leather and spiked hair, progressed on to matchy-matchy D & G outfits and hair extensions with her husband, David Beckham, then went to couture looks from Chanel. Like fashion itself, Victoria Beckham is constantly changing.

I think she looks her best in razor-sharp tailoring, like Zac Posen's "Moon" dress (right), paired with the pink ostrich Hermes (although I can't think of any color Birkin I'd like to have less than pink...). The skin-tight pants and rock 'n' roll babe with lip ring look (above, left) is best left to the likes of Joan Jett. See more of her famous looks over the past 9 years in designers like Roberto Cavalli, Azzedine Alaia and more in the Victoria Beckham photo gallery. Fall Preview: DKNY's City Chic

DKNYdknyWith its sleek, spare shapes and classic urban colors (plus the occasional pop of brights) DKNY's latest line for women is the perfect incarnation of city chic. Since its inception in 1989, DKNY has been the quintessential New York lifestyle brand. Designer Donna Karan -- who started her namesake line in 1984 -- sees her designs as right for "A creative person who never knows where a day is going to take them," according to the corporate website.

For Fall '07, the look features cute little skirts and dresses in tunic lengths that give you the option of layering over leggings or not. Sequined tops under suits, pictured left, are a great day-into-night look. Classic tweeds take the form of slouchy sweater that you'll want to throw over everything or wide-leg pants (pictured right), which looks so great with a black sequined sweater and that fabulous scarf. Style Icon: Dita Von Teese

dita von teeseIt's not everyday that a stripper makes a best-dressed list, but burlesque queen Dita Von Teese is not your average pole dancer. The glamourpuss performer is known for her elaborate shows (she bathes in a martini glass) and her incredible sense of style, which has a very strong vintage vibe to it.

Dita Von Teese's life is an exotic mix of Marilyn Manson (her goth ex-husband), fetish (her book "Burlesque and the Art of the Teese/Fetish and the Art of the Teese"), matching Louis Vuitton luggage and Paris couture fashion shows. Which is all pretty interesting, but we just care about the clothes. And nobody looks more at home in elegant gowns and perfect dresses right now than Dita Von Teese, so find your fashion inspiration in our new Dita Von Teese photo gallery. In the fast-paced world of fashion and style, a good party is très necessaire. After all, with do-or-die deadlines, hectic travel schedules and countless photo shoots, the FASHION felines rarely get a chance to kick up our five-inch heels. So when the invitation arrived to celebrate Escada’s redesigned flagship store in Toronto, I threw on something fresh and fizzy (think: a bright tank and tulip skirt), and made my way down the red carpet rollout at 110 Bloor St. W. for a glass of bubbly and a glance at the pre-fall buys.

Strut your stilettos into any swish nightspot of late and you’ll find that amid the usual bar banter and eyelash batting, the style set is looking at the world through rose-coloured glasses. From the Barbie-inspired bubbly (pink champers is the trendy new tipple) to the swingy frocks in petal and high-powered pink, it appears that everything is coming up roses. So it isn’t surprising that the ladies-with-the-latest are warming to the trend of rose gold jewellery.

Into each and every fashionably frenzied life, there comes a time to recharge the Energizer Bunny batteries. A time to find inner Zen, not the closest H&M. A time to acquire more chi than Gucci.

Recently, between drowning in work deadlines and tossing out a life preserver to save my sinking Visa (the summer sales had turned me into a trend-driven Tasmanian devil), I decided it was time to breathe and reboot on a stylish summer vacation. Unfortunately, the closest thing I had to the smell of sea air was the Michael Kors Island fragrance wafting over from our beauty department. But with my mind wandering from Mainbocher to Maine, and with no immediate getaway appearing in my crystal ball, the question was raised: In the summer, what is a city girl to do? The answer: Find a higher power, or rather tower. Destination: The Four Seasons Hotel’s rooftop pool for a little stylish summer sizzlin’.

Do the Charleston for charity

Like any true fashionista, I am obsessed with all super chic treats in the world of wardrobe and other wowable finds.

My amour du jour is the recently rehabbed darling of the New York fashion scene, Marc Jacobs, and his Spring 2007 ready-to-wear collection. With its bejewelled headbands, dainty drop waists and megawatt metallics, it is official that the ’20s are trendy again. But where can a dame don a cloche hat and a flapper-inspired frock without looking like a Louise Brooks blunder? The answer arrived on my desk last week, and this dame thinks it is going to be the cat’s pyjamas.

After a late night (12 a.m.!) at the J.Lindeberg fashion show, hosted by Elmer Olsen Model Management at the Ultra Supper Club on Queen Street West, FASHION realized two things the next morning:

  1. Sunglasses and a slick of bright lipgloss do a feting femme good
  2. Blazer-wearing boys (in the show and the crowd) are on our style radar

Despite a few fashion casualties (felled by fierce-looking boots on sore feet), too much caffeine and too little sleep, the fashion pack turned up today looking perfectly turned out. Inside the Liberty Grand, spirits were still high and the ankle booties even higher. On with the shows…

Looking to spot some gems today, I was armed and ready with my Fashion Week essentials: Starbucks, a cellphone and sunglasses. After popping in at the Tevrow + Chase showroom to view the fall lineup (watch for print blouses, adorable bubble skirts and fab egg-shaped coats—j’adore!), I raced back to the Liberty Grand to join the fashion pack for today’s runway roster.

Question: Has spring already passed me by? With the weather at a balmy 10 degrees and a cream Burberry duster coat sweetly whispering “spring” in my ear, I am already thinking about the new collections and knitwear for Fall 2007. On the (stilettoed) heels of the fall international collections in Milan and Paris, Toronto’s L’Oreal Fashion Week has officially begun with all of its fanfare, fashionistas and fabulousness.

With the band

With the band

Posted on February 26, 2007

Every morning on my way to work, I stop off at the local coffee shop. Truth be told, I need a serious shot of caffeine before I can think couture. Standing in line, listening to the bountiful beverage preferences, I begin to think about making choices. As we do at Starbucks, over time we tend to develop favourites: clothing, trendy or timeless; men, creative or corporate; lipstick, natural and nude or pucker-up pink. So when designers crowned the newest member of spring’s It list, I made the choice to get with the band…the headband, that is. After all, with the easy, natural hair on the runways this spring, a head-turning band is just the “hairapy” the doctor ordered.

Hitting cruise control

Hitting cruise control

My name is Sarah, and I am a window shopaholic. Like a fashionable fish, I swim toward the many shiny lures—a chain-handled bag, a platform shoe, or a to-die-for dress. So, last week as I stared at my pale reflection in the travel agency glass, I knew instantly what I needed (besides a serious sweep of blush): a sigh-inducing island getaway. It was time to hit cruise control. What could be better than sun, sand and a suitcase full of the latest resort collections?

Cowgirl Boots Add Fashion Fun For Fall 2005

Originally a working man's boot developed to make riding and working safer for the cowboy, western boots have come a long way. Far from home, home on the range, far from chaps and spurs, and even farther from the rodeo circuit, western cowgirl boots are a fun, feminine, and flirty way to dress up, or down any outfit this fall.

There are vintage cowgirl boots, dressy cowgirl boots, and rough out cowgirl boots. Stiletto heel or one inch heel. Square toe or pointed toe. Distressed leather or lizard, or python, or ostrich. Pink piping is being shown on a distressed brown leather cowgirl boot, and teal piping on shiny black leather cowgirl boots. Scrolled wingtips are available in blue, red, green, and pink. Low rise or tall rise, fringed or buckled, take your pick. Go online and have a pair of custom cowgirl boots made. You can actually create your custom cowgirl boot from the bottom up, the heel, toe, top scallop and stitch pattern. Anything goes.

Western theme fashion is making a hit for fall 2005 and is being called by some the "new sexy". Cowgirl boots are being shown this year dressing up short denim skirts that are being worn with babydoll cami's and cropped velvet jackets, and with denim dresses accented with ornate silver and turquoise buckle belts. They are seen dressing down Mexican inspired lush silk crepe de chine dresses. They are being worn with multicolored tier skirts with sexy lace tees and short denim jackets. Blue jeans of any rise, low, medium or high are being shown with ornate embroidery worn with western inspired leather tooled belts and fringed suede jackets. The western look is made even sassier when paired with a large turquoise necklace and chandelier earrings.

Boots to Work and Dance in!

Wearing boots today is even more popular than ever. It used to be that boots were only for stomping through the mud with. Now however, boots can be as fashionable and stylish as you’d like. From motorcycle boots to cowboy boots and western boots, they’re all gaining in popularity. If you want to be on the edge of rugged fashion, get yourself some boots.

An early form of the boot was also known in Greece and Rome. Since ancient times men and women have recognized the need for a sturdy work boot. Today the choices of boots are great…wonderful styles and comfort.

Both men and women are wearing boots to all occasions that would have been unthinkable a short while ago. If you’re considering adding boots to your shoes collection (or if you’re looking at good solid work boots) you can find anything you want on the internet.

With today’s boots you can work, dress up and dance…all with the same pair of boots. When you’re deciding you which pair of boots to buy don’t settle for anything less than solid quality. You’ll find that a good pair of boots will fit better and wear longer than an inferior pair.

Chose from only the best suppliers of boots. It doesn’t matter if its wolverine boots or fashionable thigh boots, you can find any style your looking for.
